Thule (Qaanaaq) – Grönlands nördlichste Stadt im hohen Arktis Norden

Thule, heute Qaanaaq, liegt im äußersten Nordwesten Grönlands und gehört zu den nördlichsten dauerhaft bewohnten Orten der Welt. Die Stadt ist nur per Flugzeug oder Schiff erreichbar und liegt am Inglefield Fjord.

1953 wurden die Bewohner des ursprünglichen Thule umgesiedelt, um Platz für die US-Luftwaffenbasis Thule (heute Pituffik Space Base) zu schaffen. Die zivile Siedlung trägt seitdem den Namen Qaanaaq.

Mit rund 600 Einwohnern, überwiegend Inuit, ist die Stadt kulturell stark geprägt von traditionellen Lebensweisen wie Jagd und Fischfang. Das extreme arktische Klima bringt lange, kalte Winter, kurze Sommer und mehrere Monate Mitternachtssonne bzw. Polarnacht.

Thule/Qaanaaq verbindet arktische Kultur, historische Bedeutung und strategische Lage und ist ein einzigartiges Ziel für Reisende und Forscher.

Thule (Qaanaaq) – Greenland's northernmost town in the high Arctic North

Thule, now Qaanaaq, is located in the far northwest of Greenland and is among the northernmost permanently inhabited settlements in the world. The town is only accessible by plane or ship and lies on the Inglefield Fjord.

In 1953, the residents of the original Thule were relocated to make way for the US Air Force base Thule (now Pituffik Space Base). Since then, the civilian settlement has been called Qaanaaq.

With around 600 inhabitants, mostly Inuit, the town is culturally strongly influenced by traditional lifestyles such as hunting and fishing. The extreme Arctic climate brings long, cold winters, short summers, and several months of midnight sun or polar night.

Thule/Qaanaaq combines Arctic culture, historical significance, and strategic location, making it a unique destination for travelers and researchers.
