Frankfurt am Main – Skyline und Geschichte

Frankfurt am Main ist mit 759.224 Einwohnern (Stand: 31. Dezember 2021) die bevölkerungsreichste Stadt des Landes Hessen und die fünftgrößte Deutschlands. Sie ist kreisfrei und bildet das Zentrum des Ballungsraums Frankfurt mit mehr als 2,3 Millionen Einwohnern. In der Metropolregion Frankfurt/Rhein-Main leben etwa 5,8 Millionen Menschen.

Eine Besonderheit für eine deutsche Stadt ist die stetig wachsende Hochhaus-Skyline. Einige markante Wolkenkratzer gehören zu den höchsten Europas. Deshalb wird Frankfurt am Main mitunter ironisch als „Mainhattan“ bezeichnet.

Historische Wahrzeichen sind die Alte Oper sowie das teils rekonstruierte Ensemble der Altstadt mit Römerberg und Rathaus Römer, dem Dom-Römer-Areal und dem Kaiserdom.

Mehr als 40 Prozent des Stadtgebiets bestehen aus Parks und Landschaftsschutzgebieten, darunter der Frankfurter Grüngürtel mit dem seit 1372 im Besitz der Stadt befindlichen Frankfurter Stadtwald.

Frankfurt am Main, with 759,224 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2021), is the most populous city in the state of Hesse and the fifth-largest city in Germany. It is an independent city and forms the center of the Frankfurt metropolitan area with more than 2.3 million residents. Around 5.8 million people live in the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main metropolitan region.

A distinctive feature for a German city is its continuously growing high-rise skyline. Several prominent skyscrapers rank among the tallest in Europe. For this reason, Frankfurt is sometimes ironically referred to as “Mainhattan.”

Historic landmarks include the Old Opera House and the partially reconstructed old town ensemble around Römerberg and the town hall Römer, the Dom-Römer quarter, and the Imperial Cathedral.

More than 40 percent of the city area consists of parks and protected landscapes, including the Frankfurt Green Belt and the Frankfurt City Forest, which has been owned by the city since 1372.
