Hansestadt Stralsund – Tor zur Insel Rügen

Stralsund ist eine Stadt im Nordosten Deutschlands im Landesteil Vorpommern des Bundeslandes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Seit 1990 trägt sie offiziell die Bezeichnung Hansestadt Stralsund.

Bereits 1234 erhielt Stralsund das Lübische Stadtrecht und ist damit die älteste Stadt Pommerns. Als Gründungsmitglied der Hanse erlangte sie durch internationalen Handel großen Wohlstand.

Die Altstadt mit ihren zahlreichen Baudenkmälern und bedeutenden Beispielen der Backsteingotik gehört seit 2002 gemeinsam mit Wismar als UNESCO-Welterbe zu den „Altstädten von Stralsund und Wismar“.

Stralsund ist zudem ein bedeutendes touristisches Zentrum der südlichen Ostseeregion – unter anderem bekannt für das Deutsche Meeresmuseum mit dem Ozeaneum Stralsund, das Stralsund Museum sowie Veranstaltungen wie die Wallensteintage oder den Rügenbrücken-Marathon.

Aufgrund der Lage am Strelasund, der Meerenge zwischen Festland und der Insel Rügen, wird Stralsund auch als „Tor zur Insel Rügen“ bezeichnet.

Hanseatic City of Stralsund – Gateway to the Island of Rügen

Stralsund is a city in northeastern Germany, located in the region of Western Pomerania in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Since 1990, it officially bears the title Hanseatic City of Stralsund.

Stralsund received Lübeck city rights in 1234 and is therefore the oldest city in Pomerania. As a founding member of the Hanseatic League, it gained considerable prosperity through international trade.

Its historic old town, with numerous monuments and outstanding examples of Brick Gothic architecture, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar” since 2002.

Stralsund is also an important tourist destination in the southern Baltic Sea region, known for the German Oceanographic Museum including the Ozeaneum Stralsund, as well as events such as the Wallenstein Days and the Rügen Bridge Marathon.

Due to its location on the Strelasund, the strait between the mainland and the island of Rügen, Stralsund is often called the “Gateway to Rügen.”
