Trier – Römisches Erbe an der Mosel

Trier (französisch Trèves, luxemburgisch Tréier, lateinisch Augusta Treverorum) ist eine kreisfreie Stadt an der Mittelmosel. Mit rund 110.000 Einwohnern ist sie die viertgrößte Stadt des Landes Rheinland-Pfalz.

Vor mehr als 2000 Jahren als Augusta Treverorum gegründet, gilt Trier als älteste Stadt Deutschlands, da sie diesen Status bereits in römischer Zeit innehatte.

Die römischen Baudenkmäler Triers gehören seit 1986 zum UNESCO-Welterbe. Dazu zählen das Amphitheater, die Barbarathermen, die Kaiserthermen, die Konstantinbasilika, die Porta Nigra sowie die Römerbrücke.

Zum Welterbe gehören außerdem zwei bedeutende mittelalterliche Bauwerke: der Trierer Dom und die Liebfrauenkirche.

Trier – Roman Heritage on the Moselle

Trier (French: Trèves, Luxembourgish: Tréier, Latin: Augusta Treverorum) is an independent city located on the Middle Moselle River. With around 110,000 inhabitants, it is the fourth-largest city in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Founded more than 2,000 years ago as Augusta Treverorum, Trier claims to be the oldest city in Germany, as it already held this status in Roman times.

Trier’s Roman monuments have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1986. They include the Amphitheatre, the Barbara Baths, the Imperial Baths, the Basilica of Constantine, the Porta Nigra, and the Roman Bridge.

Two important medieval buildings are also part of the World Heritage Site: Trier Cathedral and the Church of Our Lady.
