Hansestadt Wismar – Backsteingotik an der Ostsee

Die Hansestadt Wismar liegt an der Ostseeküste Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns am südlichen Ende der durch die Insel Poel geschützten Wismarer Bucht. Sie ist die sechstgrößte Stadt des Landes und Kreisstadt des Landkreises Nordwestmecklenburg.

Wismar war früh Mitglied der Hanse und erlebte im Spätmittelalter eine Blütezeit, die bis heute im Stadtbild mit zahlreichen gotischen Baudenkmälern sichtbar ist. Seit 2002 gehören die Altstädte von Wismar und Stralsund als „Historische Altstädte Stralsund und Wismar“ zum UNESCO-Welterbe.

Nach dem Dreißigjährigen Krieg kam Wismar 1648 unter schwedische Herrschaft, die bis 1803 andauerte. An diese Zeit erinnert noch heute das jährliche Schwedenfest.

Aufgrund ihrer kulturhistorischen Bedeutung und der Lage an der Ostsee ist Wismar ein beliebtes Reiseziel. Wirtschaftlich spielen der Hafen, Schiffbau, Maschinenbau, Holzverarbeitung sowie Gastronomie und Handel eine wichtige Rolle.

Hanseatic City of Wismar – Brick Gothic on the Baltic Sea

The Hanseatic City of Wismar is located on the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, at the southern end of the Bay of Wismar, protected by the island of Poel. It is the sixth-largest city in the state and the administrative center of the district of Nordwestmecklenburg.

Wismar was an early member of the Hanseatic League and flourished during the Late Middle Ages. Its historic center, characterized by impressive Brick Gothic architecture, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar” since 2002.

After the Thirty Years’ War in 1648, Wismar came under Swedish rule, which lasted until 1803. This period is still commemorated today by the annual Sweden Festival.

Due to its rich cultural heritage and coastal location, Wismar is a popular tourist destination. Economically, the port, shipbuilding, mechanical engineering, timber processing, gastronomy, and retail play important roles.
