Ostia Antica – Hafenstadt des antiken Rom

Ostia Antica ist das Ausgrabungsgelände der antiken Stadt Ostia, der ursprünglichen Hafenstadt des antiken Rom und möglicherweise dessen erster Kolonie.

Der Name Ostia leitet sich vom lateinischen ostium („Eingang; Mündung“) ab und bezieht sich auf die Mündung des Tiber.

Zur Unterscheidung vom in den 1920er Jahren neu gegründeten Stadtteil Ostia wird die antike Stätte als Ostia Antica („Altes Ostia“) bezeichnet.

Ostia Antica – The Port City of Ancient Rome

Ostia Antica is the archaeological site of the ancient city of Ostia, the original harbor city of ancient Rome and possibly its first colony.

The name Ostia derives from the Latin word ostium (“entrance; mouth”), referring to the mouth of the Tiber River.

To distinguish it from the modern district of Ostia, founded in the 1920s, the ancient site is called Ostia Antica (“Old Ostia”).
