Pisa – Stadt am Arno in der Toskana

Pisa liegt in der Region Toskana am Fluss Arno, nahe dessen Mündung in das Ligurische Meer. Im Mittelalter war Pisa als Republik Pisa ein bedeutender Stadtstaat und zählte zu den italienischen Seerepubliken. Heute ist die Stadt mit rund 91.000 Einwohnern Hauptstadt der Provinz Pisa.

Das bekannteste Wahrzeichen ist der Schiefe Turm von Pisa, der Campanile des Doms auf der Piazza dei Miracoli im Norden der Altstadt.

Die Piazza dei Miracoli beherbergt ein einzigartiges Ensemble mittelalterlicher Baukunst: das Baptisterium – die größte Taufkirche der Welt –, den Friedhof Camposanto Monumentale sowie den Dom Santa Maria Assunta mit seinem berühmten Glockenturm. Seit 1987 gehört der Platz zum UNESCO-Welterbe.

Pisa – City on the Arno in Tuscany

Pisa is located in the region of Tuscany on the Arno River, near its mouth at the Ligurian Sea. During the Middle Ages, Pisa was an important maritime republic and city-state. Today, with around 91,000 inhabitants, it is the capital of the Province of Pisa.

Its most famous landmark is the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the campanile of the cathedral on the Piazza dei Miracoli.

The square features a remarkable ensemble of medieval architecture: the Baptistery – the largest in the world –, the cemetery Camposanto Monumentale, and the cathedral Santa Maria Assunta with its iconic bell tower. Since 1987, the site has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
