Salerno – Hafenstadt am Golf von Salerno

Salerno (lateinisch Salernum) ist eine Hafenstadt am Golf von Salerno im Süden Italiens. Erste Siedlungsspuren reichen bis ins 9. Jahrhundert v. Chr. zurück. Der heutige Name geht auf die römische Kolonie und das Militärlager Salernum zurück.

Salerno ist Hauptstadt der gleichnamigen Provinz in der Region Kampanien und seit 1970 Universitätsstadt. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entwickelte sich Salerno zu einer Großstadt mit heute rund 133.000 Einwohnern.

Zu den bedeutendsten Bauwerken zählen das Castello di Arechi, dessen Ursprünge teilweise bis in die normannische Zeit reichen, sowie der Dom von Salerno mit seinem markanten Glockenturm. Hier befinden sich die Grabstätten des Heiligen Gregor VII. und möglicherweise auch des Evangelisten Matthäus.

Salerno – Port City on the Gulf of Salerno

Salerno (Latin Salernum) is a port city on the Gulf of Salerno in southern Italy. The first settlements date back to the 9th century BC. Its name derives from the Roman colony and military camp Salernum.

Today, Salerno is the capital of the Province of Salerno in the region of Campania and has been a university city since 1970. After World War II, it developed into a large city with approximately 133,000 inhabitants.

Notable landmarks include the Castello di Arechi, partly dating back to Norman times, and the Cathedral of Salerno with its imposing bell tower. The cathedral houses the tomb of Saint Gregory VII and possibly that of the Evangelist Matthew.
