Vancouver Island – Kanadas größte Pazifikinsel

Vancouver Island, früher auch Quadra genannt, ist die größte nordamerikanische Insel im Pazifik. Sie liegt im Südwesten der kanadischen Provinz British Columbia und ist nach dem britischen Seefahrer George Vancouver benannt.

Obwohl der südliche Teil der Insel südlich des 49. Breitengrades liegt – der im Westen Nordamerikas die Grenze zwischen den Vereinigten Staaten und Kanada bildet – gehört Vancouver Island aufgrund des Oregon-Kompromisses vollständig zu Kanada.

Die Insel ist bekannt für ihre wilde Pazifikküste, dichte Regenwälder, zerklüftete Fjorde und eine artenreiche Tierwelt. Städte wie Victoria, die Provinzhauptstadt, verbinden britisches Erbe mit maritimem Flair.

Vancouver Island – Canada’s Largest Pacific Island

Vancouver Island, formerly also known as Quadra, is the largest Pacific island in North America. It lies in the southwest of the Canadian province of British Columbia and is named after the British explorer George Vancouver.

Although the southern part of the island lies south of the 49th parallel – which forms the border between the United States and Canada in western North America – the island belongs entirely to Canada as a result of the Oregon Compromise.

Vancouver Island is renowned for its rugged Pacific coastline, dense rainforests, dramatic fjords and diverse wildlife. Cities such as Victoria, the provincial capital, combine British heritage with maritime charm.
