Meknès – Königsstadt am Mittleren Atlas

Meknès (Zentralatlas-Tamazight: ⴰⵎⴽⵏⴰⵙ – Ameknas, arabisch مكناس – Miknās) ist eine Stadt im nördlichen Marokko mit knapp 600.000 Einwohnern. Sie liegt in der Region Fès-Meknès am Fuß des Mittleren Atlas.

Der Name der Stadt geht auf den Berberstamm der Miknasa zurück, der den Ort ursprünglich besiedelte.

Die gesamte Altstadt (Medina) sowie die Ville impériale aus der Zeit von Sultan Mulai Ismail wurden 1996 von der UNESCO zum Weltkulturerbe erklärt.

Meknès liegt auf etwa 520 Metern Höhe in einer fruchtbaren Ebene zwischen dem Zerhoun-Massiv im Norden und dem Mittleren Atlas im Süden.

Meknes – Imperial City at the Middle Atlas

Meknes (Central Atlas Tamazight: ⴰⵎⴽⵏⴰⵙ – Ameknas, Arabic: مكناس – Miknās) is a city in northern Morocco with nearly 600,000 inhabitants. It is located in the Fès-Meknès region at the foothills of the Middle Atlas Mountains.

The city’s name derives from the Berber tribe of the Miknasa, who originally settled the area.

The entire old town (medina) and the imperial city built under Sultan Moulay Ismail were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

Meknes lies at an elevation of about 520 meters in a fertile plain between the Zerhoun Massif to the north and the Middle Atlas to the south.
