Bandipur – Bergstädtchen im Mahabharat-Gebirge

Bandipur (Nepali: बन्दीपुर – Bandīpur) ist ein kleines Bergstädtchen im Distrikt Tanahu in Zentralnepal.

Seit 2014 bildet Bandipur gemeinsam mit benachbarten Dörfern (dem ehemaligen VDC Dharampani) eine eigene Munizipalität (Nagarpalika).

Der autofreie Ort liegt auf einem etwa 200 Meter langen, schmalen Sattel auf gut 1.000 Metern Höhe zwischen zwei rund 1.300 Meter hohen Gipfeln des Mahabharat-Gebirges.

Die Nordflanke fällt steil in das rund 700 Meter tiefer liegende Marsyangdi-Tal ab, durch das die wichtige Verbindungsstraße von Kathmandu (143 km östlich) nach Pokhara (80 km westlich) führt.

Der Sattel ist gerade breit genug für die Hauptstraße und die beidseitig stehenden zwei- bis dreigeschossigen Holz- und Lehmhäuser in geschlossener Bauweise. Die rückseitigen Gärten fallen steil in die Täler ab und sind nur über Treppen erreichbar. Die exponierte Lage erinnert ein wenig an Machu Picchu.

Bandipur – A Mountain Town in the Mahabharat Range

Bandipur (Nepali: बन्दीपुर – Bandīpur) is a small mountain town in Tanahu District in central Nepal.

Since 2014, Bandipur has formed a municipality together with several neighboring villages (formerly the VDC Dharampani).

The car-free town lies on a narrow ridge, about 200 meters long, at an elevation of just over 1,000 meters, between two peaks of around 1,300 meters in the Mahabharat Range.

The northern slope drops steeply into the Marsyangdi Valley, about 700 meters below, where the main road connects Kathmandu (143 km east) with Pokhara (80 km west).

The ridge is just wide enough for the main street and the two- to three-story wooden and clay houses built closely side by side. The gardens behind the houses descend steeply into the valleys and are accessible only by stairs. Its dramatic setting is sometimes compared to Machu Picchu.
