Kathmandu – Hauptstadt im Herzen des Himalaya

Kathmandu (Nepali: काठमाडौं – Kāṭhamāḍauṁ, Newari: येँ – Yẽ, früherer Name Kantipur) ist die Hauptstadt Nepals. Mit etwa einer Million Einwohnern im Stadtgebiet und rund 1,4 Millionen im Ballungsraum ist sie die größte Stadt des Landes sowie Sitz der Südasiatischen Vereinigung für regionale Kooperation (SAARC).

Die Stadt liegt im Zentrum des dicht besiedelten Kathmandutals, einem auf etwa 1.300 Metern Höhe gelegenen Talkessel mit rund 30 Kilometern Durchmesser.

Gemeinsam mit den Nachbarstädten Lalitpur (Patan), Bhaktapur, Madhyapur Thimi, Kirtipur sowie zahlreichen kleineren Gemeinden bildet Kathmandu den urbanen Kern des Tals.

Die umliegenden Berge erreichen Höhen zwischen 2.000 und 2.700 Metern und rahmen die Stadt in einer eindrucksvollen Kulisse ein.

Kathmandu – Capital in the Heart of the Himalayas

Kathmandu (Nepali: काठमाडौं – Kāṭhamāḍauṁ, Newari: येँ – Yẽ, formerly Kantipur) is the capital of Nepal. With around one million inhabitants in the city and about 1.4 million in the metropolitan area, it is the largest city in the country and the seat of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

The city lies at the center of the densely populated Kathmandu Valley, a basin situated at about 1,300 meters above sea level and roughly 30 kilometers in diameter.

Together with neighboring cities such as Lalitpur (Patan), Bhaktapur, Madhyapur Thimi, Kirtipur, and several smaller towns, Kathmandu forms the urban core of the valley.

The surrounding hills rise to elevations between 2,000 and 2,700 meters, creating a striking natural backdrop.
