Kirtipur – Newari-Tradition am Rand von Kathmandu

Kirtipur (Newari: किपू – Kipu) liegt im Kathmandutal auf einem kleinen Höhenzug am südwestlichen Stadtrand von Kathmandu.

Die Stadt wurde im 11. Jahrhundert gegründet und zählt zu den historischen Zentren der Newari-Kultur im Tal. Bekannt ist Kirtipur für seine gut erhaltene Altstadt mit Tempeln, Teichanlagen und traditioneller Architektur.

Der Bagh-Bhairab-Tempel im nepalesischen Pagodenstil befindet sich in einer Tempelanlage in der höher gelegenen Altstadt und ist eines der bedeutendsten Bauwerke des Ortes.

Kirtipur ist außerdem Sitz der Tribhuvan-Universität, der ältesten und größten Universität Nepals.

Kirtipur – Newar Heritage near Kathmandu

Kirtipur (Newari: किपू – Kipu) is located in the Kathmandu Valley on a small ridge at the southwestern edge of Kathmandu.

Founded in the 11th century, Kirtipur is one of the historic centers of Newar culture in the valley. It is known for its well-preserved old town with temples, ponds, and traditional architecture.

The Bagh Bhairab Temple, built in the Nepali pagoda style, stands within a temple complex in the upper part of the old town and is one of the town’s most significant landmarks.

Kirtipur is also home to Tribhuvan University, the oldest and largest university in Nepal.
