Auckland – Tāmaki Makaurau

Auckland [ˈɔːklənd] (offiziell: Auckland Council, Māori: Tāmaki Makaurau oder Ākarana) ist mit über 1,4 Millionen Einwohnern die größte Stadt Neuseelands. Rund ein Drittel der neuseeländischen Bevölkerung lebt in der Metropolregion.

Der Māori-Name Tāmaki Makaurau bedeutet „Eine junge Schönheit mit 100 Liebhabern“ – ein Hinweis auf die begehrte Lage zwischen zwei Meeren. Ākarana ist die an den Lautstand des Māori angepasste Form von „Auckland“.

Das Stadtbild wird von 53 inaktiven Vulkanen geprägt, zwischen denen sich die weitläufige Metropole ausbreitet. Ihnen verdankt Auckland zahlreiche Parks und Grünflächen, die bis in das Zentrum hineinreichen.

Die Lage an geschützten Meeresbuchten prägt das Erscheinungsbild der Stadt ebenso – unzählige Segelboote im Hafen brachten Auckland den Beinamen „City of Sails“ ein.

The Māori name Tāmaki Makaurau translates as “A young beauty with a hundred lovers,” referring to its highly desirable location between two harbors. Ākarana is the Māori adaptation of the name “Auckland.”

The cityscape is shaped by 53 extinct volcanoes, between which the urban area spreads. These volcanic cones provide extensive parks and green spaces that reach into the city center.

Auckland’s setting on sheltered bays is equally characteristic. The countless sailing boats in its harbors have earned the city the nickname “City of Sails.”
