Tongariro Nationalpark – Vulkane und Weite

Der Tongariro Nationalpark, Neuseelands ältester Nationalpark und UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe, liegt auf der Nordinsel des Landes. Benannt nach dem Vulkan Tongariro, umfasst er eine eindrucksvolle Landschaft aus Vulkanen, Kraterseen, alpinen Wiesen und Wäldern.

Besonders bekannt ist der Park für seine drei aktiven Vulkane: Tongariro, Ngauruhoe und Ruapehu. Der markante Kegel des Mount Ngauruhoe diente in der „Herr-der-Ringe“-Trilogie als Kulisse für den „Mount Doom“.

Zu den bekanntesten Wanderungen zählt das Tongariro Alpine Crossing, das als eine der schönsten Eintageswanderungen der Welt gilt.

Die Landschaft ist geprägt von spektakulären geologischen Formationen wie dem Red Crater, den Emerald Lakes und dem Blue Lake.

Darüber hinaus besitzt der Park eine große spirituelle Bedeutung für die Māori und ist tief in ihrer Kultur und Geschichte verwurzelt.

Tongariro National Park – Volcanoes and Vast Landscapes

Tongariro National Park, New Zealand’s oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located on the country’s North Island. Named after Mount Tongariro, it features a dramatic landscape of volcanoes, crater lakes, alpine meadows and forests.

The park is famous for its three active volcanoes: Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. The striking cone of Mount Ngauruhoe was used as “Mount Doom” in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

One of the most renowned hiking routes is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, often regarded as one of the best day hikes in the world.

The landscape is characterized by spectacular geological formations, including the Red Crater, the Emerald Lakes and the Blue Lake.
