Südinsel Neuseelands – Te Wai-pounamu

Die Südinsel (englisch: South Island, Māori: Te Wai-pounamu) umfasst eine Fläche von 150.437 km². Sie wird durch die rund 35 Kilometer breite Cookstraße von der dichter besiedelten Nordinsel getrennt.

In den Neuseeländischen Alpen erhebt sich der Aoraki / Mount Cook mit 3.724 Metern – der höchste Gipfel Neuseelands und ganz Ozeaniens. Im Osten erstrecken sich die sanft abfallenden Canterbury Plains, während der Süden von zahlreichen Fjorden geprägt ist.

Die Südinsel ist nur spärlich besiedelt. Obwohl ihre Fläche fast der Hälfte Deutschlands entspricht, leben hier nur etwa so viele Menschen wie in Köln. Die größten Städte sind Christchurch und Dunedin.

South Island of New Zealand – Te Wai-pounamu

The South Island (Māori: Te Wai-pounamu) covers an area of 150,437 km². It is separated from the more densely populated North Island by the approximately 35-kilometer-wide Cook Strait.

The Southern Alps are home to Aoraki / Mount Cook, rising to 3,724 meters – the highest peak in New Zealand and all of Oceania. To the east lie the gently sloping Canterbury Plains, while the south is characterized by dramatic fjords.

The South Island is sparsely populated. Although its area is nearly half the size of Germany, it has roughly as many inhabitants as the city of Cologne. The largest cities are Christchurch and Dunedin.
