Milford Sound / Piopiotahi

Der Milford Sound / Piopiotahi (Māori: Piopiotahi) ist ein fjordartiger Meeresarm auf der Südinsel Neuseelands.

Das rund 15,7 Kilometer lange Gewässer zählt zu den bekanntesten Naturattraktionen des Landes. Es ist Teil des Fiordland National Parks im Südwesten der Insel und gehört seit 1990 als Teil der Weltnaturerbestätte Te Wahipounamu zum UNESCO-Welterbe.

Steile Felswände, tiefes, dunkles Wasser und zahlreiche Wasserfälle, die nach starken Regenfällen in die Tiefe stürzen, prägen das eindrucksvolle Landschaftsbild.

Der britische Schriftsteller Rudyard Kipling bezeichnete den Fjord nach einem Besuch in den 1890er Jahren als das „achte Weltwunder“.

Milford Sound / Piopiotahi (Māori: Piopiotahi) is a fjord located on New Zealand’s South Island.

Stretching approximately 15.7 kilometres, it is one of the country’s most famous natural attractions. As part of Fiordland National Park, it belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage area registered in 1990 under the name Te Wahipounamu.

Towering cliffs, dark waters and numerous waterfalls cascading down after heavy rainfall create a dramatic and unforgettable landscape.

The British writer Rudyard Kipling reportedly described the fjord in the 1890s as the “eighth wonder of the world.”
