Stockholm (stock: Stock, Baumstamm; holm: kleine Insel) ist die Hauptstadt Schwedens und mit 868.141 Einwohnern (Gemeinde Stockholm) beziehungsweise rund 2,1 Millionen Einwohnern im Großraum Stockholm die größte Stadt Skandinaviens.

Die Stadt erstreckt sich über mehrere Inseln zwischen dem Mälarsee und der Ostsee und ist durch zahlreiche Brücken miteinander verbunden.

Stockholm blickt auf eine mehr als sieben Jahrhunderte zurückreichende Besiedlungsgeschichte zurück und ist seit 1643 Residenz des schwedischen Königs.

Stockholm (from stock “log” and holm “small island”) is the capital of Sweden and, with 868,141 inhabitants in the municipality and about 2.1 million in the metropolitan area, the largest city in Scandinavia.

The city spreads across several islands between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea and is connected by numerous bridges.

Stockholm has a settlement history of more than seven centuries and has been the residence of the Swedish king since 1643.
