Luxor – Tempelstadt am Nil

Luxor (arabisch al-Uqṣur, altägyptisch Ipet reset) ist eine Stadt am östlichen Ufer des Nil im Zentrum Oberägyptens.

Mit über 450.000 Einwohnern ist Luxor die größte Stadt Oberägyptens und seit 2009 Verwaltungssitz des Gouvernements Al-Uqsur.

Dank der Vielzahl bedeutender kultureller Stätten sowie der Anbindung durch einen internationalen Flughafen gilt Luxor als wichtiges Zentrum der Region.

Der heutige Name Luxor bedeutet etwa „Stadt der Paläste“ und leitet sich wahrscheinlich vom arabischen al-qusūr („die Burgen“) ab.

Im Alten Ägypten war Luxor Teil der großen Königsmetropole Theben. Der Tempelbezirk trug damals den Namen Ipet reset und gehörte zu den bedeutendsten religiösen Zentren des Landes. (Quelle: Wikipedia)

Luxor (Arabic al-Uqṣur, ancient Egyptian Ipet reset) is a city on the eastern bank of the Nile in Upper Egypt.

With more than 450,000 inhabitants, Luxor is the largest city in Upper Egypt and since 2009 the administrative capital of the Al-Uqsur Governorate.

Because of its many important cultural sites and its international airport, Luxor is considered the central hub of the region.

The modern name Luxor roughly means “city of palaces” and probably derives from the Arabic al-qusūr (“the forts” or “the castles”).

In ancient times Luxor formed part of the royal city of Thebes. The temple district was known as Ipet reset and was one of the most important religious centres of ancient Egypt. (Source: Wikipedia)
