Eisfjordzentrum / Sermermiut

Der Bereich rund um das Ilulissat Icefjord Centre liegt südlich der Stadt Ilulissat am Übergang zwischen Siedlungsgebiet und UNESCO-Schutzgebiet. Das Zentrum markiert den offiziellen Zugang zum Ilulissat-Eisfjord und befindet sich auf einer leicht erhöhten Tundrafläche mit freiem Blick auf die Diskobucht und die treibenden Eisberge.

Geografisch gehört das Areal zum Sermermiut-Tal, einer eisfrei bleibenden Küstenzone mit archäologischen Spuren früher Inuit-Siedlungen. Das Gelände ist geprägt von flach gewellter Tundra, freiliegendem Fels, niedriger arktischer Vegetation und hölzernen Stegwegen, die empfindliche Bodenbereiche überqueren. Von den Aussichtspunkten öffnet sich der Blick auf das Fjordsystem und die im Hintergrund sichtbaren Eisformationen.

Klimatisch entsprechen die Bedingungen denen Westgrönlands: lange kalte Winter mit Temperaturen häufig unter −15°C sowie kurze, kühle Sommer mit Durchschnittswerten zwischen +5°C und +12°C. Durch die exponierte Lage an der Küste treten regelmäßig starke Winde auf.

Der Bereich um das Eisfjordzentrum bildet die Schnittstelle zwischen urbanem Raum, archäologischer Kulturlandschaft und aktivem Gletscherfjord. Er dient als Ausgangspunkt für die dokumentierte Annäherung an das Schutzgebiet des Ilulissat-Eisfjords.

Icefjord Centre / Sermermiut

The area surrounding the Ilulissat Icefjord Centre is located south of the town of Ilulissat at the transition between the settlement area and the UNESCO protected zone. The centre marks the official access point to the Ilulissat Icefjord and is situated on slightly elevated tundra terrain overlooking Disko Bay and its drifting icebergs.

Geographically, the site belongs to the Sermermiut Valley, an ice-free coastal zone containing archaeological traces of former Inuit settlements. The landscape consists of gently undulating tundra, exposed bedrock, low Arctic vegetation, and wooden boardwalks crossing sensitive ground areas. From the viewpoints, wide panoramas open toward the fjord system and the visible ice formations in the distance.

Climatic conditions correspond to those of West Greenland: long, cold winters with temperatures often below −15;°C and short, cool summers with average values between +5;°C and +12°C. Due to the exposed coastal location, strong winds occur regularly.

The Icefjord Centre area represents the interface between urban space, archaeological cultural landscape, and an active glacier fjord. It serves as the starting point for controlled access to the protected area of the Ilulissat Icefjord.
